Outline London report - report update

The lack of awareness is astounding; a field survey conducted by Digilog UK Ltd over the last seven months in the London area has shown thousands of open devices. This includes Government entities, Banks, Brokerage houses, Insurance, Police, Prisons, Hospitals, Law firms, Accountancy firms and Media companies.

It has been found through our extensive surveys that this is what is really happening in the capital and Digilog UK Ltd and the ICC know that this is also replicated through out every major city and town in the world.

85% of wireless cards were found to be open

15% of wireless cards were found to be using WEP encryption between 40bit and 128bit.

Only 8% of the 15% were found to be using non standard default WEP encryption keys

Example:
Company manager goes to PC World and buys a wireless card for his laptop and then goes to work and plugs into the corporate LAN using the existing network card in his laptop. This shows an obvious lack of security.

Example:
An access point can be fitted to a local area network. There maybe 100 client/PC's connected to the local area network, there maybe file servers, and mail servers behind this access point. We have found this to be an issue with some of our clients who are allowing third parties to connect to their network.
